Sub-District 60A Awarded LCIF Grant

February 1st, 2021 -Kingston: Jamaica- Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has awarded Sub District 60A a grant to the tune of USD$15,000. This matching grant will be used for the expansion of Pediatric Oncology Unit at Georgetown Public Hospital in Guyana.

A Matching Grant (previously referred to as Standard Grant) is an award of between US$10,000 and US$100,000 provided by the Lions Club International Foundation to help establish or expand Lions-initiated humanitarian service projects which address unmet critical and diverse human and social needs around the globe. The project must serve a large population and should be humanitarian in nature, in keeping with LCIF’s mission.

Matching grants typically provide funding for capital construction and equipment. Some of the typical projects include mobile health units, centers for people who are disabled or blind, eye clinics, major medical equipment, nursing homes and schools in developing countries.

The LCIF grant will allow for pediatric cancer services will facilitate expanded services by the hospital through:

  1. Expansion of the current Childhood Oncology Unit from an inpatient capacity of 4 to at least 8 patients
  2. Fully equipping the Childhood Oncology Unit with suitable equipment to manage the patients in order to prevent infection and to ensure that patients are comfortable
  3. Provision of support to families to offset the cost to parents and families during treatment, re transportation, meals for parents
  4. Establishment and maintenance of psychosocial programmes for children suffering from cancer, their parents and siblings, during and after treatment inclusive of training for care givers and support groups
  5. Supporting the establishment of a dedicated childhood cancer registry.

In addition to the funding provided by LCIF, the Lions in Guyana will raise USD$5000.00 for the project. In accordance with the requirements of LCIF, the District has six months from the date of approval to collect all local matching funds. The grant funded project must be completed with two years from date of approval.

The grant will be administered by District Governor 60A, Lion Denise Bentinck MJF.
