LIONS AND LEOS OF MD60 CONTINUE TO SERVE AMIDST PANDEMIC

August 31st, 2020 -Kingston: Jamaica- Council Chairperson Lion Denise Forrest PMJF has congratulated the Paramaribo Central Lions Club of Suriname for the construction of a new Triage Cabin at the s’Lands Hospital in Paramaribo, Suriname.

The Triage Centre was built with an Emergency grant of US$10,000.00 obtained from LCIF and is used for patients and hospital staff. The triage Centre which is separate from the main hospital building was constructed to offer additional space to screen visitors to the hospital.

The Council Chairperson in congratulating the club thanked them “for turning the spotlight on the work of the Lions in Multiple District 60 and for demonstrating that through partnership a challenge can produce an inspirational response. Thank you for your leadership.”

The Centre which contains a bed, chairs and a sanitation station will be used for patients presenting symptoms of COVID-19 with the hope of minimizing their contact with the rest of the hospital.

According to Lions Club International, in addition to the new space, there is an infrared thermometer at the entrance of the cabin, a device that can take a visitors’ temperature without any human contact. Director of nursing for the hospital, Suze Holband was especially grateful for the hands-free thermometer, which saves manpower and reduces the wait time for patients.

In addition, Lion Council Chair Denise has described the 2020/2021 lionistic year as arguably a year unlike any other in the life of the Lions Movement in Multiple District 60 and indeed the world. Clubs are facing the challenge of not only of serving their communities in traditional ways, but, are also faced with the challenge of responding to specific needs as it relates to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, while maintaining the safety and wellbeing of our membership.

Council Chairperson Forrest also congratulated those Clubs who have been responding in many ways, making masks for the blind, providing food packages, helping the elderly to access medication and to meet other basic needs
